By the next year he was a trader in Newfield Village where he acquired more property, including interest in several mills. In 1840 his house and store were sold to Mark Wood. His family moved away from Newfield. Some of Josiah and Nacy Doe Towle's descendants are buried in Mt. Hope cemetery Bangor, Maine, so they may have gone from Newfield to the Bangor, Maine area.

While yet a young man, he went to Limerick and engaged in mercantile pursuits in company with a Captain Baker; and a few years later, in 1790, came to Newfield, bought 20 acres of land of Samuel Dam, and opened a store. Family
Birth
- Emma Elizabeth Shorb was born on 12 January 1846 in Canton, Ohio.
Her father was Adam and Maria (Bowen) Shorb. Father born in Canton, Ohio. Mother born in Vermont. Cause of death listed on death certificate as cerebral hemorrhage.
Miss Emma Elizabeth Shorb is a native of Canton, Ohio, and is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adam Shorb of that town. Her father was of German descent, whose ancestors came from the fatherland and settled in that part of Pennsylvania which is now known as the state of Maryland. Her mother, before her marriage, was Miss Maria Bowen. She was the daughter of Dr. Bowen, a physician in Montpelier, Vermont. She also belonged to a large family of brothers and sisters. One of her brothers was the late Dr. Andrew Shorb, the well-known homeopathic physician of Los Angeles, California. Mrs. Towle, all her early life, received very careful home training. Her mother never allowed her to attend the public schools but she was educated in an excellent private school. A student in this school was her friend and relative Miss Ida Saxton who later became the wife of William McKinley, later President of the United States.
After a time, Miss Shorb went to spend some months with an older sister whose home was in the state of Iowa. There for the first time she attended public school. The teacher J.W. Towle, soon noticed her fine scholarship and was led to inquire how it happened that she was so in advance of all the other students in her school. She told him of her private school instruction and that she had never been in public school before. Admiration soon ripened into love and on January 20, 1863, at her home in Canton, Ohio, Miss Emma Elizabeth Shorb and Jason Whitman Towle were united in marriage. Very soon they took their bridal trip to Fryeburg, Maine, where they intended to make their new home. The home has been blessed by the presence of nine sons and daughters. (1)Sarah, who married Chester Eastman of Chatham, New Hampshire - they have six children namely: Fannie, Hester, Ruth, Philip, Harry and Mary Eastman. (2)Mary Frances, who married Dr, John Sweat of Brownfield, now Great Falls, Montana. They lost two children and now have three living children, namely: Ruth, John Jr., and Helen Sweat. (3)Ira Whitman, who married Alice Hill of Stoneham, Maine. He died leaving a widow, daughter and son, Irma and Howard Towle. (4)Daniel Clement, who married Mabel Morton of Fryeburg, no children. (5)Abbie Susan who married Charles Andrews of West Fryeburg. They have one daughter, Ethel. (6)Hattie Baker, who married Howard Jones of West Fryeburg, now of Bridgeton, Maine. They have one son, Walter Howard Jones. (7)One son, Charles Baker, died when a year old. (8)Emma Elizabeth, married Frank Haley of Fryeburg. They have three daughters, namely: Dorothy, Pearl and Leura. (9)Kate Wiley who married Erwin G. Giles of Brownfield. They have one daughter, Geraldine.
Through her father she is connected with the McKinely family. The various branches of the Shorb family claim relationship with Germany's royal family of Hohenzollerns.
The story runs as follows:
One Johan (Jacob) Shorb, married a daughter of the royal line, brought her to America, settling in Upper Maryland, and here he dwelt with his royal wife and brought up a large family of children. He was a man of wealth and owner of a large fleet of trading vessels, the fitting of which were marked with the royal arms. A cousin of Mrs. Towle had a most interesting experience in Washington during the visit of Prince Henry of Prussia. At a reception given to him in the white house, the lady was presented when he was comparatively at leisure. "But ah," said the prince, with his pleasant smile, glancing at her snowy pompadoured hair, as he shook her hand. "Do you know you have the mark of the Hohenzollerns?" "Yes, your highness," she replied, "I have been told so. It is a peculiarity which runs thru nearly every branch of our family. We turn gray early and the dark stripe over the forehead is plainly visible. My mother had it strongly marked, also her father and grandfather, for he it was who claimed first cousinship to your royal grandfather, the late Emperor William, thru his mother."
"is that so exclaimed the prince, seeming much interested. "Yes, I remember to had heard that we formerly had relatives living in Upper Maryland, near the Pennsylvania line a branch of the Shorbs, were they not?"
"Yes, your royal highness, and the Sneerengers. I believe. It is a family tradition with us that great-Grandfather Shorb had quite a packet of letters received from his royal cousin, the late Emperor William, of which he was very proud, and which are still preserved somewhere among the family heirlooms. In those days Frederic County and Lower Maryland were settled almost entirely by Germans, and many houses which they built still remain to attest the solidarity and the Faderland styles of architecture to which they adhere."
"Well this is interesting, and indeed I am very glad to have met one of my American cousins, and if you would like I will send you a copy of the royal family tree on my return," said the prince.
Mrs. Towle also had this royal mark, only with her the color is reversed being white against the dark hair. Mrs. Towle is librarian of the Woman's Library Club, D.G.P. of the Pocohontas Council, and the honorary member of the West Fryeburg Stirling Literary Club.

His wife Alice Lillian Perkins Rust had died in 1916 at age 37 leaving 4 young children. Alice and Forrest had married in 1904 while their first son was born in 1903. It's easy to guess that the Forrest's were sympathetic to Mabel's situation! and another Lillian!6

Upon retirement from the navy, he worked technical support for a large internet company. Discovering that this company was corrupt he left this line of work and went to work for International Paper where he was a machine operator for 11 years. Leaving International Paper in 2010 to fulfil a lifelong dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail from end to end. Completing this goal on 10 October 2010.
He is also known for two very successful interactive websites. WhiteBlaze, none for the Appalachian Trail and Hammock Forums, none for hammock caping. Both are the top hiker and hammock camping web forums in the world. In 2022 WhiteBlaze had 68,640 members and 1,938,923 posts, Hammock Forums had 59,395 members and 2,050,717 posts.
One accomplishment he was very proud of was his Appalachian Trail guidebooks. He started his first guidebook titled Appalachian Pages in 2008 with a partner who did him wrong. It took him six years of watching his ex-partner make money off the book he created and designed, then he created another Appalachian Trail guidebook. Knowing all the flaws from his previous guidebook, he knew how to redesign it and make it much better, and that he did.
He continued to write three more hiking guidebooks for the Long Trail, Cohos Trail, and the C&O Towpath and continues to produce more.
He is not like others that like to brag and bring attention to themselves in the AT community or anywhere in general. He does not boost or brag about his accomplishments. He is the silent type. He worked with the Appalachian Tail Conservancy and the community in many aspects but has never been employed by them. He was a trail maintainer for a section of the Appalachian Trail in Maine for 12 years.
Mr. Towle is passionate about the Appalachian Trail, the outdoors, and hunting. He never boosted about hunting or killing animals. For him it was about putting food on the table. He was good at deer hunting. Throughout his hunting career he harvested over 23 deer, one elk, and one moose. When he was out hunting, he didn't care if he harvested anything. He loved the time sitting in the woods with nature. He had many stories that he liked to share about his time in the woods.
He also enjoyed traveling, spending time up and down the Appalachian Trail during which time he would update his guidebook. He also like traveling in general and going out west. He did not see a need to travel outside of the United States. He always said, there was so much to see in the United States, why would I want to leave it. He was fascinated with the American Indian and their culture. He loved watching Buffalo and traveling in his travel trailer with Margaret.
He found the woman he was meant to be with on 19 Dec 2013, Margaret Mills. They married 27 May 2017. They now live in Denmark, Maine in the farmhouse where seven generations of Margaret’s lived and grew up in. Richard Michael Towle, Sr., lived at 159 Oak Hill Road in Litchfield, Maine, on 18 February 1999. He lived at 311 W Main St in Denmark, Maine, on 4 April 2014.
