Birth

  • Frank Ernest DeBiasio was born on 25 May 1925 in Topsham, Maine.
Served in WWII onboard the destroyer USS Colahan DD658. Built in Statton Island NY. by Bethlaham Steel. He goes by the Nickname Checko.

With the exception of the three years in the United States Navy, Frank lived in Topsham, Maine since his birth. His eyes twinkle as he tells of the times spent swimming in the pit that is now the town dump. He also talks of cutting up his model T Ford by cutting the tops off and all his buddies who did the same to there's and then running them through the woods in the same area where the pit was.

Prior to WWII he drove a truck for Kennebec Wharf & Coal along with Bert Sinclar, Carl Given, Gordan Poland, Judy Richard's(male).

In May of 1943, at the age of 17, Frank joined the U.S. Navy. Thanksgiving day that year he was aboard the destroyer the U.S.S. Colahan D.D. 658 as it went through the Panama Canal on it's way to duty in World War II. From his vantage point just off the coast of Japan, he heard the first Atomic bomb when it was dropped on Hiroshima. You're probably familiar with the picture of the Marines raising the American flag in Iwo Jima. Frank saw it first hand. His service medals show that he was involved in nine invasions during that war before his navy career ended in 1946. During his time in the U.S. Navy his pay check was $34 a month of which he sent home $15 to his father to help support the family.

After working in local garages as a mechanic for the Ford Motor Company for 41 years Frank retired. Serving as Commander of the Topsham Post of the V.F.W. for nine years as well as his membership in the D.A.V., American Legion, M.O.C., and the Tin Can Sailors association, kept him busy. He and his wife Frances spent many hours doing volunteer work at the V.A. Center in Togus, Maine. In fact, they have received honors for working over 28,000 hours and driving over 56,000 miles to and from there in that volunteer effort.

The following is from a newspaper article in the Bath/Brunswick Time Record, written by Cindy G. when she was at age 15 in grade 10:

If are a resident of the Town of Topsham, Maine you know that when you need a fire truck at your home the fire department will quickly arrive there with one. However, do you know who has been the mechanic that's helped keep those trucks running smoothly for the past thirty-some years? If I was to answer that question my answer would be "my grampa," but if you answered either "Chick" or Frank Debiasio you're correct.

With the exception of the three years he served in the United States Navy, Frank has lived in Topsham since his birth there in 1925. His eyes twinkle as he tells stories of his youth there. He mentions the happy hours spent swimming at the pit that is now the town dump. He readily admits to spending plenty of time banished to the coat room during his school years! Not that he ever had any part in it you understand, but it seems that things such as hay wagons being found in trees, trick May baskets that were hung, the bell in the town hall tower ringing during late night hours, and little tricks being played on the town police force, all happened during his youth!

In May of 1943, at the age of 17, Frank joined the U.S. Navy. Thanksgiving day that year he was aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Colahan D.D. 658 as it went through the Panama Canal on it's was to duty in World War II. From his vantage point just off the coast of Japan, he heard the first atomic bomb when it was dropped on Hiroshima. You're probably familiar with the Marines raising the American flag on Iwo Jima. Frank saw that flag raising first hand. His service medals show that he was involved in nine invasions during that war before his Navy career ended in 1946. I jokingly asked him about the old tales of sailors having girlfriends in every port. He told me that 17 year-old-sailors "hardly knew how to tie their shoelaces never mind chasing women" in those days. How times have changed!

After working in local garages as a mechanic for Ford Motor Company for 41 years Frank is now retired. Serving as commander of the Topsham Post of the V.F.W. for the past nine years as well as his membership in the D.A.V., American Legion, M.O.C., and the Tin Can Sailors Assoc., keeps him busy. He and his wife Frances spend many hours doing volunteer work at the V.A. Center in Togus, Maine. In fact, they have received honors for working over 28,000 hours and driving over 56,000 miles to and from there in that volunteer effort.

Being the father of three children and the grandfather of nine keeps him busy with fishing, hunting, and camping. Even though he has a very busy life he's always quick and ready to lend a helping hand wherever it's needed. Grandpa Debiasio, I proudly salute you! Frank Ernest DeBiasio lived.

Son*Carl Rackleff Given born 4 June 1905, died 12 September 1968

Birth

  • Charles Seville Given was born on 3 September 1865 in Topsham, Maine.
Charles started railroading first as a newsboy, later becoming a brakeman. While in the performance of his duties he was injured and was assigned to the position as crossing tender in Portland. In 1900, he returned to his old home where he had since lived. For many years up until the time of his death he had spent much of his time writing articles on railroad men and incidents for newspapers and magazines. His wide acquaintance among railroad men and a retentive memory of incidents which he had related in his early boyhood made him a very interesting writer and his weekly columns running in the 'Portland Sunday Telegram' and 'Lewiston Journal' were keenly enjoyed by many ardent readers.
Charles Given worked for the Rail Road and had a back accident once where the train derailed and Charles became crippled from the waist down. The Rail Road company gave him the bell of the train in which he was in the accident with. He later kept the bell under his wheel chair and when he wanted to call in the children from the fields he would ring the bell under the wheel chair.
According to Frank Ernest Debiasio Jr. Charles had a Gold leaf pin (broach) that was made from the gold rush and given to Charles's wife that was later handed on down to Ella Given, Franks Seniors wife. But as Frank Sr. got older he took on several house keepers and the gold leaf pin was noticed missing later after Franks death. It is assumed that one of the house keepers may have taken it.

Note: Need to research his millde name. The find a grave web site has it as "Seville".
In my notes from his grandsons wife (Frances Dibiasio) She said his name was Charles Samuel Given.

Daughter*Hannah Winchell born 1759, died 29 July 1823

Birth

  • Samuel Winchell was born on 15 March 1711 in Windsor, Conn.
Samuel Winchell, forth generation from Robert of Windsor, was born at
Windsor, March 15, 1711; married Sarah McNess of Harpswell, about 1738; died Topsham, February 04, 1783. His brother Ebenezer accompanied him, but subsequently returned and settled at Torrington, Conn. He settled in Harpswell as early as 1738. Another brother, John, was also with him in Maine in 1743. In 1740, Samuel removed to Topsham and settled near the Cathance Mills, about 5 miles above the village of Bowdoinham, in the Cathance River, a tributary of the Kennebec. The mills were erected by Samuel. He acquired, with Jacob Eaton, a joint title to the property by virtue of a deed from Isaac Royall, dated 15 Nov 1750. This conveyed 500 acres and all Royall's rights in said stream. Samuel seems to have become one-forth proprietor of the Cathance mill right, embracing 1100 acres. He was a prominent man in the town, and must of been a man of considerable wealth. It is said "he kept the first public house,--not a tavern,--but his house was deemed the first in town, and for it strangers used to inquire."
Samuel Winchell is said to have styled Colonel "from ye circumstances of
being a superior officer and worthy member of a fraternity" whose name is not stated.

Birth

  • David Given was born in 1690 in Coleraine, Ireland.
David Given the ancestor of all of that name in the Brunswick, Topsham & Harpswell vicinity, came to Maine from Coleraine, County of Londonderry, Ireland, with his wife and three sons. In 1719 he settled at Mere (spelled Mair) Point, near Brunswick, Me. In 1730 he applied to the Pejepscot Proprietors for land on the Maquoit Road, near Brunswick, Me., and also for land for his son, David Given, and for his sons-in-law, Samuel Clapp and James Campbell. In this petition David Given, Senior, spelled his name as Giveen, but many of the descendants spell it Given. The Pejepscot Papers state that Ancestor David Giveen in 1735 purchased 300 acres of land extending from Middle Bay to the Town Common where a stone marked G on three sides may be found. This land extended from Pennell land to the Old Gurnet Road. This land was purchased for $48.00, he soon moved there. The houses (Prince and Cushing houses taken over by the U.S. Navy) were later Given houses. He settled first near the shore, building four cabins, whose foundations and some logs were still visible in 1884 by Dyer family who bought some of the land at that time. Also visible were two dams in the salt water creek used for shipbuilding purposes. He was the owner of "considerable estates," and was held in high esteem by the pioneer settlers of Brunswick, Me., and was Deacon of the old Presbyterian Church there. The name of his wife is unknown. This is true of the date of his death and that his wife, as many of the old Giveen Records were destroyed in a fire in one of the old homesteads. Deacon David Given (Presbyterian) (Family Bible) was born 1690 and died June 16, 1763, aged 78 years. His wife Mrs. Mary Given died Feb. 3, 1741, aged 66 years.
It is the opinion of many of the descendants of Ancestor David Giveen that he came to America in Temple's celebrated Scotch Irish Colony. He surely was of the same sturdy and God-fearing character as the others of the Temple Colony among whom he lived at Brunswick, Me.
