Spouse/Partner: Sarah Batchelder born 20 January 1748, died 4 January 1786

Son*Daniel Clement+ born 7 March 1773, died 29 September 1840

Birth

  • Colonel Obadiah Clement was born on 19 February 1743 in Kingston, New Hampshire.
Col. Obadiah Clement was born in that part of Kingston which later became Sandown. His father and two of his older brothers evidently died in the French War, while the third one sold to him his share in their father's property, (p. 172). In spite of his large holdings in Sandown, he went in 1773 to Warren, where he became on of the most prominent of the town. He was a copper by trade and worked at it throughout his life.
After Colonel Clement removed to Warren, he built a large cabin at the meeting of the bridlepaths, taking great pains with it and making it twice the size of any other cabin in town. The logs were hewn smooth and the house was shingled. On the first floor were two large rooms, a cupboard and pantry, with two fireplaces of stone, while the ganet contained four bedrooms. Each room had one or more windows for which the glass was brought from "down country" on horseback. When this pretentious dwelling for the time and place was finished, Colonel Clement moved in and opened an inn. He was also the first miller at the little falls on Blackbrook. Tradition tells that he ws large, stout man, of quick motions.
It does not appear that Obadiah Clement saw active military service in the Revolutionary War, but he was a Delegate to the Constitutional Convention in Concord, 10 June 1778. In 1783, he was a selectman of Warren; in 1784, he was commissioned a Major of the 13th Regiment, and in 1786 was made a Colonel.
In 1767, Mr. Obadiah Clement mentioned in the Sandown Church records, and three of his children were baptized there, before his removal to Warren.
Obadiah Clement appears in Census of 1790, as of Warren, with four males above the age of sixteen, three below the age of sixteen, and five females, in his family.
Colonel Clement left no will and there was no administration of his estate. Colonel Obadiah Clement had person sources.1

Death

  • Colonel Obadiah Clement died in 1829 at age ~86 in Warren, New Hampshire.

Son*Colonel Obadiah Clement+ born 19 February 1743, died 1829

Birth

  • Obadiah Clements was born on 22 May 1707 in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
Obadiah Clements had no children recorded by his first wife, Priscilla, but the pension record of a Reuben Clements of Sandown, who was born in 1750, proves him to have been a grandson of Obadiah Clements. Since Obadiah's first child by his second wife, Sarah, was born in 1734 and presumably died unmarried, and since his first daughter was born in 1740, the conclusion is forced upon one that there was a child by Priscilla Heath, and that Reuben Clements, the Revolutionary soldier, was a son of this child. The matter is further complicated by the fact that Obadiah also had a son Reuben, born in the same year as his grandson, Reuben. This son Reuben however, lived in Warren, with his brother Jonathan and was said to have been mentally unbalanced at times. Not only is there no record of birth of this child of Priscilla, but there is no record of marriage or death of any man or women by the name of Clements, who might have been the parent of Reuben, Obadiah's grandson.
Obadiah Clements removed to Kingston, N.H., between 21 May 1743 adn 6 Sept. 1749. He evidently settled in that part of Kingston which became Sandown, for after his death, the Sandown Church records state that, 30 Nov. 1759, widow Sarah Clement was proposed for membership, and admitted to the church, 13 Jan. 1760. He may have been "of Kingston," after 1743, but he had his children recorded in Haverhill until 1749, also entering their on the Kingston records. From 1 May to 2 Nov. 1759 he was a member of Caapt. Elisha' Winslow's Company in the French War.

Died before 30 NOV 1759, probably in French war. Sarah was his 2nd wife.

In 1711, Job Clements, with others, signed a petition asking the town of Haverhill to build a new schoolhouse near his dwelling place, at the North western part of town, in order that he and his neighbors might "have the benefit of having their children brought up to learning, as well as the children of those who live in the center of town."

John Clements served as a soldier in King Philip's War, in 1676. He took the oath of Allegiance at Haverhill, in 1677.

John Clements of Haverhill, conveys, to father-in-law Robert Ayer of Haverhill, for £ 200, his house, barn, and cider mill, with all his ox-common, part of which he bought of Robert Swan, Sr., and all lands in Haverhill and income of the same, 2 Mar. 1691-2.
(Ipswich Deeds, 5: 472.)

As John Clements died within a few months of this transfer of property, it seems probable that the land was in trust for the benefit of his wife and children. MORE TO COME LATER.

Birth

  • Robert Clements was born about 1634 in England.
Robert Clements Jr came with his father to Haverhill in 1642. In a list of people settled in Haverhill by 1646, he is mentioned as Robert Clements Jr. He was the first Cooper of Haverhill. He married very young, as had his father before him, and in 1658 had three children. In 1658, he went to England and Ireland at the desire of his brother John who wished him to come over with his family to act as a guide to John's wife and daughters. The documents which tell of the voyage, the capture by the Spaniards, the going to Ireland, the return to New England appear in the probate papers of John's (p:40) The settling of his estate also shows the strong affection and sense of justice of the brothers and sisters, for they all wished John's estate given to Robert to recompense him for his losses caused by compliance with John's request.
After his return to New England he continued to live at Haverhill for the rest of his long life. In 1662, Robert Swan sued him for making use of one acre and a half of meadow, situated in Haverhill, which the plaintiff bought of Isaac Cozens, and for hindering him from getting it recorded according to the town order. Swan lost the suit. (April Court, 1662.) It is quite evident that there was bad feeling between him and Swan, for on 14-2-1663, he sued Swan, for a debt of eighteen pounds due for a horse about seven years past last Michaelmas and won the suit. (Essex Quarterly Court files 2:379; 3:57.)
On the 31:1:1664, John Severance sued him for debt, incurred for entertainment at his house and for entering one action at Salsiburg Court in 1663, part of which was to be paid in money, butter or wheat about Michaelmas last. (Ibid 3:148.)
On the 17th Nov. 1663, George Hadley of Rowley acknowledged in court that he had received, on 10 Mar, 1657, from Robert Clements Jr., thirty-three bushels of wheat on John Godfrey's account.

HAVE THREE MORE GENERATION I HAVE TO INPUT FROM BOOK

Robert Clements (Richard of Cosby, Robert of Croft, Richard of Croft), baptised at Cosby, Leicestershire, England, 14 Dec. 1595 died at Haverhill, Mass., 29 Sept. 1658. He married first Lydia ------, who was buried at Ansley, Warwickshire, 12 Mar. 1642, and secondly, before 1657, Judith -----, who married after his death, John Whitney * of Watertown, Mass., and died in 1669.
Robert Clements probably grew to manhood in the parish at Cosby, receiving an education which developed a mind unusual for the times. Although the records showed little of him in youth, it can not be doubted that the great formative influences of the period profoundly affected him.
In 1617 his father, Richard Clements, died and on 20 Oct. in that year Robert Clements, then aged twenty three years, was granted administration on his estate. (Act Book Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 1615-1618, Fol:133.).
Unfortunately the papers relating to Ricahrd Clements estate are lost, only the record of the commission to the administrator being preserved. In this same year, 1617, Robert Clements paid £60 for land in Huncote, where he lived for a number of years. Huncote is in the parish of Narborough, Leicestershire, and near Croft, Leire, Sutton, and Broughton Astley. At all of these places he had relatives living.
* = FROM ABOVE - John Whitney aged 35, with wife Elinor aged 30, embarked at London in 1635, in the Elizabeth & Ann, Roger Cooper, master. Freeman of Watertown, 1635-6. Elinor Whitney died 11 May 1659.
In 1619, his mother Agnes died, and the administration of her estate was granted at Leicester, on 7 Aug 1619, to William Fellowes of Enderby, (Act Book, co. Leicester, 1604-1634) William Fellowes was evidently her eldest son by a former marriage. In the record of the commossion she called "Agnes Clements of Huncote." She was undoubtedly living with her son, Robert Clements, at the time of her decease.

MORE TO COME BUT SKIPPED.

Much research has failed to disclose anything in regard to the parentage of Lydia, the first wife of Robert Clements, and the mother of all his children. That her memory was cherished is evidenced by the fact that each of the children named a daughter for her. Robert Clements buried her at Ansley on 12 Mar. 1642. One of her descendants has lately had a bronze tablet to her memory set in the wall of the Ansley Church. It bears the following inscription:
"In memory of
Lydia Clements
Buried in this churchyard March 12, 1642
The wife of Robert Clements who emigrated to
New England 1642
And became one of the founders of
Haverhill, Massachusetts."
